Research Fellowship After PhD: 6 Funded Routes for 2027

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships call closed on 9 September 2026 with a record 21,627 proposals. The European Commission expects to fund nearly 1,600 projects, which works out to roughly one award for every 14 applications. If you are searching for a research fellowship after PhD, that ratio explains why the researchers who land funding rarely bet on a single scheme. They run three or four applications on different clocks.

The schemes below reward different kinds of proposals, so you can apply to several without writing the same document twice. Most take between seven months and a year to go from deadline to first payment, which means the choices you make this month decide which of them you can still reach in 2027.

Research Fellowship After PhD: 6 Funded Routes for 2027

What most postdoc funding lists get wrong

Start with what is no longer there. The Royal Society’s Future Leaders, African Independent Research scheme, known as FLAIR, launched in 2018 as a £25 million partnership with the African Academy of Sciences. It let early career scientists in sub-Saharan Africa build independent research at home. UK aid cuts around 2021 hit its funding, and the Royal Society’s own page for the scheme is now archived with a plain statement that it is closed to applications. Any list that still shows it as open is repeating a call from years ago.

The second gap is the Fulbright African Research Scholar Program. It is built for university faculty and research staff, and the Ugandan call for the 2027 to 2028 round lists immediate post PhD research among the activities it does not support. Country deadlines for that round fell between March and August 2026, so for most countries it has already closed.

The third gap is the mobility rule underneath the European schemes. MSCA European Fellowships require that you have not lived or worked in the host country for more than 12 of the 36 months before the deadline. A researcher who spent more than a year as a visiting scholar in Germany cannot use that same lab as an MSCA host. Check the rule against your own calendar before you pick a host. For funding beyond the postdoc stage, our list of international fellowships for professionals covers the next rung.

The six routes to a research fellowship after PhD

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (Europe)

This is the only scheme here open to every nationality and every discipline. European Fellowships last 12 to 24 months at a host in an EU or associated country, and you need a PhD, or a successful unconditional defence, by the deadline. The 2027 call is expected to open on 7 April 2027 and close on 8 September 2027 at 17:00 CEST, and it is reported as the last call under the current Horizon Europe programme, so treat those dates as indicative until the official MSCA page confirms them. Global Fellowships, which add an outgoing phase outside Europe, are meant for EU and associated country nationals or long term residents, so researchers based in Africa should aim at the European route. The 2026 call also barred applicants who had scored below 80 percent the year before. Your 2026 score arrives in February 2027, so look for that rule in the 2027 guide before you plan a resubmission.

Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdocs (Germany)

The Humboldt Foundation funds 6 to 24 months in Germany at €3,000 a month, plus a mobility allowance and a travel lump sum, and the stay can be split into up to three periods within three years. You can apply at any time, but a selection committee of about 65 academics meets only in March, July and November, and a decision usually takes four to seven months. An application sent this month will not be settled before spring 2027. Your doctorate should be under four years old, a German host must have agreed to the plan, and your research outline must not be a direct continuation of your thesis. German nationals have a separate scheme for going abroad, and anyone the Foundation has sponsored before is excluded.

Newton International Fellowships (United Kingdom)

The Royal Society Newton International Fellowships bring early career researchers from outside the UK to a British host for two years, with a maximum award of £280,000. The 2026 round opened on 15 January and closed at 17:00 GMT on 11 March, and the next call is expected to close around March 2027, though that is not confirmed. Two rules arrived in 2026: you can have no more than five years of active full time postdoctoral experience, and each UK sponsor can support only one application per round. You also cannot have spent more than three months in the UK during the 12 months before the deadline. Natural sciences go to the Royal Society. Humanities and social sciences go to the British Academy, which runs its half under the name International Fellowships.

Branco Weiss Fellowship (host anywhere)

The Branco Weiss Fellowship, run through ETH Zurich, offers up to CHF 600,000 over five years at a host institution of your choice, and the money can cover salary, equipment, travel and staff. The 2027 call closes on 15 January 2027 at 5 pm CET. You must hold your PhD by that date and have earned it no more than five years earlier, and only parental leave and illness count as reasons to extend. You cannot have held a faculty level position, and your chosen mentor can support one candidate per round. The fellowship says it typically does not fund mainstream projects that other funders could support, and you must be able to attend the annual symposium near Zurich in person, which matters for visa planning.

Africa-China Initiative Postdoctoral Fellowship (Washington DC)

Georgetown University and Howard University’s Center for African Studies close this one on 15 November 2026, a week from now. It lasts 18 months from January 2027, pays $72,000 a year plus benefits, and includes one round trip flight. You need a PhD in a field such as history, political science, international relations, sociology, economics or anthropology, a research record on Africa and China, and residence in the Washington DC area, splitting your time between the two universities. The file needs a cover letter, CV, 500 word proposal and writing sample. The posting set 31 October 2026 as the date for reference letters, so contact the programme at once if your referees are still pending.

Postdocs hosted at African universities

This route is a family of calls, and it runs more than a year ahead of the start date. The University of Cape Town’s University Research Committee fellowships for a 2027 start closed on 15 September 2026. The 2026 round was worth R325,000 a year with no relocation costs, and UCT normally awards it to researchers whose doctorates are less than five years old, in any discipline. The University of Pretoria’s 2027 programme, which was open to international candidates, closed on 30 October 2026, and the National Research Foundation’s 2027 postdoctoral grants closed internally in April 2026. UCT used 15 September in both 2025 and 2026, so plan for a similar date in 2027 for a 2028 start.

How the deadlines line up for a research fellowship after PhD

Put the dates on one page and a pattern appears. Read this as a planning sequence rather than a ranking.

  • 15 November 2026: Africa-China Initiative Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • Any time, with decisions in March, July and November: Humboldt Research Fellowship
  • 15 January 2027: Branco Weiss Fellowship
  • February 2027: MSCA 2026 results arrive, and UK host universities set internal Newton deadlines
  • About 11 March 2027 (expected): Newton and British Academy International Fellowships
  • 7 April to 8 September 2027: MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2027
  • Mid September 2027 (expected): UCT URC fellowships, with Pretoria’s call about six weeks later if it follows 2026

Two things stand out. September 2027 is crowded, with MSCA and UCT closing within about a week of each other, so draft your research plan once in the spring and write each version from it. The funders also disagree about novelty. Humboldt does not want your outline to continue your thesis, and Branco Weiss wants work that departs from the mainstream, while MSCA scores a training and mobility case alongside the science. One proposal cannot serve all of them, so give your boldest idea to Branco Weiss in January and your sturdiest project to MSCA in April.

Tools to plan your applications

Seven deadlines across several countries is a project, and it needs a tracker. Our guide to building an application tracking system works as well for postdoc applications as for student ones: one row per scheme, one column for your host’s reply, one for each referee. Pair it with our research proposal guide, which shows how funders such as DAAD, Fulbright and the NSF set different page limits for the same idea.

Five tips for a stronger application

1. Lock your host before you write a word

Humboldt asks you to agree the outline and duration with your host before applying. Newton lets each UK sponsor back one application per round, and Branco Weiss lets a mentor support one candidate. The first email is therefore your real first deadline. Ask each potential host whether they have already agreed to support someone else this round, and send a one page summary so they can answer in an afternoon.

2. Work to your institution’s deadline, not the funder’s

Oxford’s engineering department wanted Newton expressions of interest by 11 February 2026 and final internal approval by 4 March, a week before the funder’s 11 March cut off. African universities work the same way. UCT’s own research group asked for candidate files on 2 September 2026, thirteen days before the university’s 15 September close. Write to your research office in the first week of any call.

3. Count your residence days on a calendar

MSCA looks at 12 months in the 36 before the deadline. Newton looks at three months in the 12 before it. Branco Weiss counts the age of your PhD. Write the dates out for each deadline and mark every visiting post, conference stay and short contract in the target country, because memory is unreliable and the rules are not flexible.

4. Document career breaks months before you need them

Branco Weiss wants official confirmation of parental leave or illness emailed before you submit, and advises sending it one to two months ahead of the deadline. The leave can extend your eligibility by up to one year. Newton and MSCA also adjust for career breaks, though each defines them differently. Gather the letters while the people who can sign them are still easy to reach.

5. Read your first score as data, not a verdict

If you applied to MSCA in September 2026, your evaluation report arrives in February 2027. Read the reviewers’ comments before deciding whether to resubmit. Then check whether your score still blocks reapplication under the 2027 rules, since the 2026 call used an 80 percent threshold. A proposal that scored just under the line usually needs a sharper training plan, not a new idea.

Frequently asked questions about research fellowship after PhD

Can I apply before my PhD defence?

For several schemes, yes, but the proof differs. MSCA accepts a successful unconditional defence before the deadline, Newton wants the PhD awarded or successfully defended by the closing date, and Branco Weiss needs you to have passed your defence before 15 January 2027. Ask your institution for a letter confirming the defence date, because a defence promised for next month does not count.

How long after my doctorate can I still apply?

It depends on the scheme. Newton allows up to five years of active full time postdoctoral experience, Branco Weiss wants a PhD no more than five years old, Humboldt asks for a doctorate under four years old, and MSCA European Fellowships allow up to eight years of research experience, with extensions for time outside research. Ask the funder’s helpdesk before assuming a career break puts you inside the window.

Can researchers living in Africa apply for these fellowships?

Yes. MSCA European Fellowships take any nationality, Humboldt excludes only German nationals, and Newton is for researchers with citizenship outside the UK who live and work outside it when they apply. The residence rules favour people who have not recently lived in the host country, which describes most researchers based in Africa. Postdoc funding at African universities is open too, and Pretoria’s 2027 call welcomed international candidates.

Is there a postdoc fellowship only for African researchers?

The best known one, FLAIR, is closed. The Fulbright African Research Scholar Program serves African faculty and excludes immediate post PhD research, and its 2027 to 2028 deadlines have mostly passed. For grants beyond fellowships, see our list of research grants for international scientists. Most funded routes open to African researchers today are judged on the proposal alone, whatever your passport says.

Can I hold more than one postdoc fellowship at once?

Applying to several is normal, but holding them together is limited. UCT treats its URC fellowship as a primary award and, under its 2026 conditions, allowed at most 50 percent of its value, R162,500, to be held alongside another postdoc fellowship. Branco Weiss lets fellows start a faculty post after the first year without ending the fellowship. Read each funder’s conditions before you accept a second offer.

How much does a research fellowship after PhD pay?

Humboldt pays €3,000 a month for postdocs, the Africa-China Initiative pays $72,000 a year, and UCT’s URC round for 2026 paid R325,000 a year. Newton’s £280,000 cap covers two years of salary plus research and other costs. Branco Weiss allows up to CHF 600,000 over five years for all research costs. Compare schemes by what the money must cover, since a headline figure can include far more than your own income.

Where to start this week

Three points matter most. The calendar clusters, with Branco Weiss in January, Newton in March, MSCA in September and two African host calls right after. Older lists, FLAIR above all, include schemes that have already closed. And every serious scheme depends on a host who agrees before you write. Send two emails in the next few days, one to a potential host and one to your research office, then use our research proposal guide to turn your idea into the one page summary that makes the first email easy to answer. You finished a doctorate, so you already know how to keep a long project moving while you wait on other people’s replies.
