AI Scholarships for Africans 2027: What Is Open Now
Of the US$28,000 the AI4D Africa programme offered each registered PhD student in its 2025 call, only US$4,000 was tuition. The other US$24,000 was research money. That one split explains why so many people misread AI scholarships: the best known names are funding schemes with narrow doors, specific nationalities and calendars that shift from one year to the next, not tuition waivers for anyone who can code.

Why most AI scholarships are not what the headline says
Start with a naming problem. The programme you may see written as the AI4D African Scholarship Fund is officially the AI4D Africa Scholarship Programme, run by the African Centre for Technology Studies in Nairobi with money from Canada’s International Development Research Centre and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
Next, understand what kind of money it is. AI4D pays registered PhD students and early career academics who already have a place, a supervisor and an approved proposal. It funds research, not the search for a programme. If you are still choosing where to study, start with the master’s routes below or with our guide to fully funded PhDs abroad.
Then there is Google DeepMind, which funds universities rather than choosing students. The administrator’s FAQ says each partner university sets its own admission criteria and nominates admitted students, and that not every partner takes part every year.
The detail most competing articles skip sits on the AIMS South Africa AI for Science page. It says the Google DeepMind donation funds 40 scholars a year for four years starting in September 2023. Count forward and 2026/27 is year four. We found no published call for a September 2027 intake, so treat continuation as unconfirmed rather than assumed, and check the page from early December.
AI scholarships open for the 2027 intake: who can apply and what they pay
AI4D Africa Scholarship Programme
The PhD award splits into up to US$4,000 for two years of tuition and up to US$24,000 for research. Early career academics, meaning people who earned an AI or machine learning PhD no more than five years ago, can receive up to US$41,500. PhD candidates needed finished coursework, an approved proposal and a supervisor’s letter. Nigeria was on the 2025 country list, but the 2022 call named francophone and lusophone countries only, so the list changes. Full terms are on the ACTS call page.
AIMS South Africa AI for Science
Applicants must be African citizens living in Africa when they apply, with residence waived for people displaced by war, and must never have held an AIMS scholarship. The taught content applies AI to cosmology, epidemiology and ecology, so your statement needs a science problem and not only a skills list. Watch the programme page for the next call.
Google DeepMind AI Masters through IIE
The 2026 host countries were Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, France, Poland, Romania, South Africa, Turkey and Uganda. You apply to the university first and the university nominates you. When Wits announced its awards in 2025 it gave preference to South African citizens from underrepresented groups, and Makerere’s two 2026/27 awards were open to Ugandan citizens only.
Erasmus Mundus DEAI
This is the most open route on the list, because its eligibility rules set no nationality restriction. Five European universities deliver it, and you need English at B2 level, for example IELTS Academic 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 72. A partial award covers tuition only, and a self funded student from a partner country pays €9,000 a year. Our Erasmus Mundus guide explains how the wider scheme works, and the DEAI admission page holds the strict dates.
CMU-Africa and the Mastercard Foundation
Admission to the MS in Engineering Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology or Electrical and Computer Engineering comes first, and the Mastercard Foundation award is considered after that. Applications open each year on 1 October. A file in by 15 December gets its competency test fees paid, and the final date is 15 January. Compare it with our Mastercard Foundation Scholars guide for UCT.
European Master in Law, Data and AI
If your degree is in law, policy or the social sciences, this Erasmus Mundus programme invites applicants from diverse academic backgrounds. The window runs from 16 November 2026 to 17 January 2027.
Six mistakes that sink a data science scholarship application
Each of these follows from how a programme is built, so you can spot it before you submit.
Treating AIMS as a general data science master’s
The stream is AI for Science. Its local partners point at cosmology, epidemiology and ecology. An application about predicting ad clicks reads like an essay written for a different programme.
Assuming every DeepMind award is pan African
Only the AIMS programme recruits across the continent. Makerere’s awards are for Ugandans, and Wits stated a preference for South Africans. Read the host university’s own rule before you spend a week on an essay.
Applying to AI4D without a supervisor
The PhD category needs registration in an AI study, finished coursework, an approved proposal, an admission letter and a supervisor’s letter. Ethics approvals can run alongside the application, but the paperwork cannot be skipped. You must also show plans to deploy the solution, and your data will be published.
Missing how DEAI scores you
Points scale with the share of computer science credits in your bachelor’s, and no more than 10% of selected applicants can share a nationality. In a crowded national pool, your rank among compatriots can matter as much as your rank overall.
Trusting a deadline you did not read on the official page
Chevening’s 2027/28 round closed on 6 October 2026, yet we found listing sites still showing an early November close. A date with no link to the funder’s own page is a rumour. Copy deadlines only from the programme site, and note the time zone, because DEAI closes at 12:00 GMT.
Letting the CMU-Africa early date pass
Files in by 15 December get competency test fees paid. After that you need a valid Duolingo English Test, IELTS or TOEFL score ready. Finishing in early December avoids both a cost and a delay.
One calendar for every deadline
Build one tracker before December. Our application tracking system guide shows how to set one up with a column for the official source, so every date has a link behind it. Start with these.
Ask your referees now, because the December holidays eat more notice than you expect. DEAI also scores the cover letter, so read our motivation letter guide before you draft it.
Five tips for applying to AI scholarships the way selectors score them
1. Show your computer science credits, not your degree title
DEAI awards points in proportion to the share of computer science credits in your curriculum. It also scores second degrees and IT work experience. If you studied physics or engineering, request a transcript that lists programming, algorithms and statistics modules with their credit values. Add certificates with their hour counts. Selectors cannot give points for coursework they cannot see.
2. Anchor your AIMS essay in one scientific question
Pick one of the three focus areas and name a real problem inside it, such as modelling how a disease spreads or classifying objects in telescope images. Then explain what you would need to learn and why a year in Muizenberg suits that plan. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed, so write only what you can defend aloud.
3. Settle your supervisor and approvals before an AI4D call opens
The 2025 call asked for a supervisor’s letter, an admission letter and evidence that your proposal was approved. It also wanted a problem definition built with a user community and a data collection plan, with the data later published under the funder’s open access policy. Our research proposal guide shows how funders weigh method and scope, and our statement of purpose guide helps with the motivation text.
4. Choose referees who can describe your work
DEAI gives points for the approval and comments in each letter and for the referee’s reputation, which it measures with an H factor. A letter that describes your project in detail gives selectors something to score, which a famous name who barely knows you cannot. Send referees your CV and the programme page early.
5. Apply to more than one route and read what a partial result means
A DEAI partial scholarship covers tuition but no monthly allowance, and a self funded offer means you pay yourself. For a Belgian student visa, a self funded student needs a guarantor who can show income to pay you €666 a month after keeping €1,254.82 for themselves and €150 for each dependent. Applying to both DEAI and CMU-Africa, which run on different calendars, also gives you a fallback if one result goes the wrong way.
Frequently asked questions about AI scholarships for Africans
Is there an AI4D African Scholarship Fund, and is it open for 2027?
The funder’s own pages call it the AI4D Africa Scholarship Programme, and it is managed by the African Centre for Technology Studies. The latest call we could verify opened on 14 January 2025 and closed on 14 March 2025 for women PhD students and early career academics. We found no open call on 30 October 2026. Check the ACTS page monthly, because among these AI scholarships it can reappear without warning.
Can Nigerians apply for Google DeepMind scholarships?
Yes for the AIMS South Africa AI for Science master’s, which accepts citizens of any African country who live in Africa when they apply. The IIE administered awards are different, because each host university sets its own rules. Makerere limited its 2026/27 awards to Ugandan citizens, and Nigeria was not among the 2026 host countries.
Do I need a computer science degree to win a data science scholarship?
Not always, but it helps in some places more than others. DEAI asks for a bachelor’s equal to 180 ECTS, ideally in computer science, and scores the share of computer science credits. AIMS looks for a strong mathematical or computational background, and the Law, Data and AI master’s welcomes applicants from other fields. A data science scholarship checks the coursework behind the degree title.
How much does an Erasmus Mundus master’s in AI actually pay?
For DEAI, a full scholarship covers participation costs, including tuition and insurance, plus €1,400 a month for up to 24 months. Partial awards cover tuition only. Self funded students from partner countries pay €9,000 a year in tuition. These figures come from the programme’s own scholarship page.
Will the AIMS AI for Science master’s open again for 2027?
It has not been announced. The 2026/27 call closed on 6 March 2026, after listings showed 21 March in 2025 and 29 March in 2024, so deadlines have moved earlier each year. The programme page says the donation covers four years from September 2023. Prepare your documents in December and let the official page confirm the dates.
Which documents should I prepare first?
Start with the ones that depend on other people: reference letters, a supervisor’s letter for AI4D, and a transcript that lists your computer science modules. Then secure an English test score, since DEAI accepts IELTS Academic 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 72 and CMU-Africa wants a valid score after its early date.
Where to go next
Three points matter most. January is the real window, with DEAI closing on 11 January 2027 and CMU-Africa on 15 January. The AIMS call and AI4D have no confirmed 2027 dates, so prepare documents now. And nationality rules differ by host, so read each one before you write a word.
If you are still choosing between a master’s and a research route, read our guide to how Erasmus Mundus works before you open the DEAI portal.
