Top Fully Funded LLM Scholarships for African Law Graduates 2027
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission stops accepting Master’s applications for 2027/28 at 16:00 BST on 20 October 2026, and Chevening already closed on 6 October. If you hold a law degree and you are searching for LLM scholarships for Africans 2027, those two dates explain why the next ten weeks matter more than the next ten months.
Most of the funding still available sits in a tight run of deadlines between 8 December and the end of January, spread across Cambridge, Oxford, New York and a few European universities. Some of these awards pay for everything. Others pay a fraction and leave a gap that no official page spells out.

This guide sorts the routes by what they actually cover, who can apply and which date you cannot miss. Keep your transcripts open in another tab while you read.

Why LLM scholarships for Africans 2027 are harder to find than they look
Search for a scholarship made only for law graduates and you will find very few. Nearly every large award in this guide is a general scholarship, so an LLM applicant competes with PhD candidates, engineers and public health researchers for one pool. Gates Cambridge shows the effect clearly. It funds somewhere between 70 and 80 students a year across every subject Cambridge teaches, and about two thirds of those awards go to doctoral candidates. A taught law masters is chasing the remaining third alongside every other subject.
That is the first misconception to drop: an LLM is not a protected category. Selectors do not ask whether law deserves funding. They ask what you will do with it.
The second detail most competing articles skip is how funders frame their priorities. The Commonwealth Commission funds study under six development themes and asks for a four part development impact statement. Australia Awards Africa lists climate change, agriculture and food security, mining and energy, foreign policy and international security, and gender equality, disability and social inclusion as priority areas. Law is not on that list as a subject. An LLM only fits if you can show it sits inside one of those areas, such as mining and energy law or international security law.
So before you compare stipends, name the problem in your country that your LLM would help solve. That answer will carry more weight than a small difference in grade.
Fully funded law masters abroad: what each programme covers
Dates below come from official pages as of 17 October 2026. Where a programme sets dates course by course, the table says so rather than guessing.

Commonwealth Master’s: the details that disqualify people
You need a 2:1, or a lower second plus a relevant postgraduate qualification, and you must be a permanent resident of an eligible country. The Commission funds one year taught programmes only, so a two year or research degree does not qualify, and it does not fund MBAs. It does not require an IELTS score, but you must already have applied to your universities, up to three in ranked order, and it will not change that order after selection. You apply through a nominator, usually a national agency, because the Commission takes no direct applications. The full rules sit on the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships page.
Cambridge, Oxford and NYU: the academic bar
The Cambridge LLM is a nine month taught degree where you choose four courses from around 30 on offer, and offers are capped by a university quota. Its entry standard is a first class law degree or the equivalent, and Gates candidates add a separate Gates reference. At Oxford, BCL and MJur applicants who apply by the January deadline are considered for Clarendon scholarships automatically, and the Law Faculty’s needs based bursaries are worth £20,000.
NYU’s Hauser Global Scholars, about 10 a year, receive full tuition and a stipend and must be graduates of a law school outside the United States. NYU also runs the Podell scholarship for one student from a low or lower middle income country on the World Bank list, covering tuition, living costs and a flight. Most other awards are partial, as NYU states on its LLM scholarships page.
Erasmus Mundus: two years, several countries
The joint master’s in International Law of Security, Peace and Sustainable Development runs across partner universities including Tartu and Radboud. Scholarship holders pay no tuition and receive €1,400 a month for up to 24 months. You can apply to a maximum of three Erasmus Mundus programmes in one year.

Your sequence from now until January
Most guides list deadlines. They rarely tell you what to do first. This order is built around which documents are hardest to get, not which scholarship is most famous.
This week: Commonwealth, if your country is on the list
Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and South Africa are among the eligible countries. Contact your nominating agency today, because nominators may set closing dates earlier than 20 October. The Commission needs a passport copy, complete transcripts for every higher education qualification and two references uploaded as PDFs before the deadline. It treats missing transcript pages as grounds for ineligibility and accepts references by no other route. If you are reading this after 20 October, skip this step and use the same preparation for the next cluster. Our Commonwealth scholarship guide covers the other award types.
Late October to mid November: build one core file
Gather transcripts, a CV, three referees and a one page study plan that names the modules you want and the problem they address. Reuse the facts, never the paragraphs. The Commonwealth form wants development impact, Cambridge wants an academic case alongside leadership and commitment to improving other people’s lives, and Erasmus Mundus consortia want to know why you need a programme spread across several countries. Our statement of purpose guide and motivation letter guide cover the two formats.
Late November to 17 December: the first deadline stack
Check which Cambridge funding round your LLM falls into, 8 December or 6 January, and brief your Gates referee before they are swamped with year end work. NYU closes on 17 December for full time fall 2027 entry. Read the graduate admissions instructions for any extra scholarship materials before you assume the main application covers them.
January: Oxford and Erasmus Mundus
Clarendon consideration at Oxford is automatic once you apply by the January deadline. The £20,000 Faculty bursary is different: you receive the means assessment form with your offer letter, so you cannot count on it when you apply. For Erasmus Mundus, partner pages give different January cut off dates, 22 January on one and 31 January on another, so use the consortium’s own site and submit early.
Practical tools to build before you write
Two resources on this site will save you from the mistakes that end applications early. The first is our application tracking system guide, which shows how to build a sheet with one row per deliverable: transcript, referee, essay, deadline and nominator date. The second is our scholarship essay guide.
Neither gives you a template for the study plan that these applications lean on most, so build it as a one page table with four rows: the legal problem you want to work on, the courses that address it, the work you will do when you return, and how someone else could measure the result. That last row mirrors the impact question the Commonwealth Commission asks. Add one more column to your tracker called “who pays first”, because Erasmus Mundus pays only after you arrive and begin your studies.
Five tips for winning an LLM scholarship
1. Answer the question the selector is asked
The Commonwealth criteria are candidate merit, quality of the proposal and potential development impact in your home country. Gates Cambridge looks for academic excellence, leadership potential and commitment to improving the lives of others. Print the criteria for each award and write one sentence beside every paragraph of your draft saying which criterion it serves. Any paragraph with no sentence beside it goes.
2. Choose modules like an argument
Pick modules that build toward one problem rather than four interests. A lawyer who wants to work on mining contracts and picks courses in energy law, investment law and environmental law is telling a story. Four unrelated electives tell the committee you have not decided. The Commonwealth form asks for a detailed plan of study, and Cambridge expects you to choose four LLM courses, so the choice is part of your case.
3. Treat referees as part of the application
The Commission wants references in the referee’s own words, signed, on letterhead or in an email that shows their details, uploaded as PDFs before the deadline. If you are employed, one referee should be your current employer. Send each referee a one page brief with the criteria, two achievements worth mentioning and the date. Referees are the part of the application you do not control, which is why they deserve a calendar reminder rather than a hope.
4. Fix your transcripts before you write a word

The Commission wants transcripts for every higher education qualification, with certified translations if they are not in English, and it treats missing pages as ineligible. Request them now, because registries can be slow. If a current course has no final transcript yet, ask for a to date transcript and explain in the application why the final one is not available.
5. Spread your applications across the calendar
Treat the Commonwealth route, the December deadlines and Erasmus Mundus as separate bets, not as copies of one another. You can apply to up to three Erasmus Mundus programmes per year, which is a built in way to hedge. Keep one master document of facts and rewrite the framing for each funder.
Frequently asked questions about LLM scholarships for Africans 2027
I missed Chevening. Can I still apply for an LLM scholarship this cycle?
Yes, but the window is narrower than it was in August. Chevening closed on 6 October 2026, although the 2027/28 round opened on 4 August, so expect the next one to open around the same time next year. For this intake, the Commonwealth Master’s round closes on 20 October, and Gates Cambridge, Oxford, NYU and Erasmus Mundus close between December and January.
Does the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship fund an LLM?
It can, as long as the course is a one year taught master’s at a UK university with a funding agreement. The Commission does not fund research master’s degrees or MBAs, and it will not fund a second qualification beyond the one you were selected for. You apply through a nominator rather than directly, and nominators send their chosen candidates to the Commission by December 2026. Applicants hear the outcome by July 2027.
Can I stay in the UK to work or qualify after a Commonwealth scholarship?
No. Scholars sign an undertaking to return home before their student visa expires, and switching to a graduate or other visa to remain in the UK is not permitted. The only extension the Commission considers is a move from a master’s to a PhD, under strict conditions. If post study work in the UK is part of your plan, a different scholarship suits you better.
How many fully funded places does NYU actually offer LLM students?
Very few. Hauser typically names about 10 scholars a year, NYU describes Vanderbilt full tuition awards as limited in number, and Podell is a single scholarship for one student from a low or lower middle income country. For everyone else, NYU says selected students usually receive partial tuition support.
What if my country is not on the Commonwealth list?
You still have routes. For fully funded law masters abroad in the 2027 intake, Gates Cambridge, Oxford’s Clarendon scholarships, NYU’s Hauser programme and Erasmus Mundus accept applicants regardless of Commonwealth membership, with the UK excluded for Gates. These LLM scholarships for Africans 2027 matter most to applicants from countries such as Senegal or Côte d’Ivoire, which are not on the Commonwealth Master’s list.
When does Erasmus Mundus pay, and how much?
Scholarship holders receive €1,400 a month for up to 24 months, and tuition is waived at every partner university. Some programmes let you take three advance payments of €1,000 and a lower monthly amount of €1,275 instead. Payments start after you arrive and begin your studies, so you need your own funds for flights, visa fees and the first deposit.
About this guide: Our team checked the Commonwealth, NYU and Oxford Law Faculty details in this guide against their official pages on 17 October 2026. Where a programme publishes dates course by course, such as Cambridge funding rounds, we say so instead of guessing. Dates and amounts change each cycle, so confirm the final figure with the funder before you pay for transcripts or test fees.
Where to start this week
Three takeaways matter most. The Commonwealth round closes on 20 October, so check your country and your nominator today. The December and January cluster is where the largest awards sit, and each one needs a different framing of the same facts. And an LLM wins funding when it is tied to a problem you intend to work on, not when it is presented as a credential.
