How to Transfer From a Nigerian University to a US or UK University (2027 Guide)
The University of Virginia’s College of Arts and Sciences counts at most 60 credits from outside the university toward the 120 a degree needs. George Mason takes up to 75 lower level credits, or 90 if upper level courses are included, and only for grades equivalent to C or better. Caps like these are routine, which is why you never simply continue a degree when you transfer from Nigerian university abroad. A registrar translates your record, course by course, and decides what the translation is worth.
That translation is where students lose a semester or a full year. It is also where you can win one back. For Nigerian applicants in 2027 the stakes include a US visa suspension that reaches new student visas and a UK funding threshold that rises on 30 November 2026.

What transfer actually means, and what most guides miss
Most applicants imagine a fixed exchange rate between a Nigerian course and a foreign one. No such rate exists. A credential evaluator such as WES can produce a course by course report that lists each course you took with a recommended equivalent in US semester credits, but that report is advice. The receiving university decides what counts, and it often decides after you have been admitted.
That order of events matters. At Missouri State, credits from international institutions are first logged mostly as departmental electives, and the student then goes through a revision process to move them onto specific degree requirements. The same office caps foreign credit at 30 credit hours per academic year of study, warns that a credit hour elsewhere is not automatically a US credit hour, and records the credits but not the grades.
Then there are articulation agreements, a term you will meet on admissions pages. An articulation agreement is a signed arrangement in which two institutions decide in advance which courses at one will count at the other. In the United States they mostly connect community colleges to public universities inside one state and were built for domestic students, so a Nigerian university rarely has one. Some UK universities are different. Bournemouth University says it is building advanced entry agreements with overseas institutions and lists them on a global partnerships page, and the University of Gloucestershire publishes a list of overseas progression partners. Check lists like these first, because a partnership turns a negotiation into a lookup.
How to transfer from Nigerian university abroad: the US and UK compared
United States
US universities evaluate foreign coursework line by line and cap what they accept. Published limits vary widely. Virginia’s College of Arts and Sciences allows 60 credits from outside the university in total. George Mason allows 75 lower level credits and up to 90 overall, counts only grades equivalent to C or better, and does not transfer pass or fail courses. The University of Houston accepts up to 66 lower division semester hours at C minus or better and still requires 30 semester hours in residence.
Order a course by course evaluation from a NACES member such as WES, and expect it to want your transcript sealed and sent by your Nigerian university itself.
United Kingdom
The UK has no national framework for foreign credit. Each university runs its own recognition of prior learning policy, and you normally apply through UCAS with Year 2 chosen as the entry point, as ARU and Roehampton instruct. The University of East London says Year 2 entry normally assumes 120 credits completed at level 4, and Sussex sends international certificates to a NARIC review to fix their credit value. Some courses refuse advanced entry because the curriculum is sequenced, and Queen Mary’s transfer policy says so. If your modules do not line up, an offer for Year 1 is the likely result.
Whichever country you choose, a transfer application usually needs a short explanation of why you are moving. Our statement of purpose guide shows how to write it.
A worked example: how a registrar reads your transcript
The case below is an illustration, not a real student’s file. It follows the patterns in the published policies above. Picture a student who has finished four semesters of Computer Science at a federal university in Nigeria and is applying to a US university.
Courses that land cleanly
Calculus, programming and data structures usually map to named courses, because a department can match them to a specific requirement. These carry the most value, and syllabi make the match easier.
Courses that land as electives
General Studies courses such as Use of English or Nigerian Peoples and Culture rarely match a US requirement. George Mason, for example, takes English courses from non US institutions as elective credit. Elective credit still counts toward the 120 total, but it does not shorten your major.
Courses that may not count at all
Industrial training placements, pass or fail courses and anything below the minimum grade are at risk. Your Nigerian result also has to convert. A pass on the 5.0 scale will not always become a US grade above the C line, so read the conversion on your evaluation before you assume anything.
The unit problem
A two unit Nigerian course may translate to two US credits, or fewer after a conversion factor. Four full semesters at home can therefore come out as less than two years of credit abroad. Any credit transfer international university policy you read is specific to that school, so run this exercise for each target.
Five steps the official pages do not spell out
- Email admissions with a summary of your courses and ask for the transfer credit policy and whether a pre admission evaluation is offered.
- Ask each department for stamped course outlines showing topics, contact hours and textbooks.
- Order the course by course evaluation and have your registrar send the transcript straight to the evaluator.
- Request the credit evaluation in writing before you pay a deposit.
- If credits arrive as electives, file the appeal or revision with syllabi attached. George Mason routes appeals through the academic department, and Missouri State runs a revision process.
Deadlines and visa limits for the 2027 intake
The US: a visa suspension that changes the plan
Presidential Proclamation 10998 partially suspended visa issuance for nationals of 19 countries, Nigeria among them, from 1 January 2026. It covers F, M and J visas and applies to people who were outside the United States that day and held no valid visa. A Nigerian student applying from Lagos for a first F-1 therefore falls inside it unless an exception applies. The US Mission in Nigeria notice lists limited exceptions, including dual nationals applying on a passport from an unaffected country and lawful permanent residents. Applicants may still file and attend interviews, but may be refused issuance or admission, and the restriction still appeared on the Embassy’s visa page in early November 2026.
Ask each admissions office about deferral before paying fees. Our F-1 visa guide covers the steps if you qualify. A separate DHS rule would end open ended F-1 admission and stop students changing schools in their first year. A federal court blocked it on 14 September 2026 and the appeal is still running, so check its status before planning around either outcome.
The UK: one deadline and one funding rise
On the UCAS timeline, most undergraduate courses for 2027 entry have an equal consideration deadline of 18:00 UK time on 13 January 2027, and the final date for 2027 applications is 23 September 2027. From 30 November 2026 the Home Office requires £1,570 per month for London courses and £1,203 elsewhere, for up to nine months, up from £1,529 and £1,171 (Statement of Changes HC 584). That is £14,130 or £10,827 for a full nine months, held for 28 days and added to unpaid first year tuition. After graduating, the Graduate route is 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027, as our work visa after graduation guide explains.
A practical resource: tracking every course
A transfer file has more moving parts than a normal application: every course, its unit value, your grade, the syllabus status, the evaluator’s result and each university’s final decision. Build it as a sheet with one row per course and one column per target university, using the deadline and document columns from our application tracking system guide as the base. When an admissions officer replies about a course, paste the answer into its cell the same day.
Five tips that separate smooth transfers from expensive ones
1. Ask for the credit policy in writing before you pay any fee
Application fees are small next to a lost semester. Email the transfer office, quote your course titles and ask how foreign credit is counted, capped and graded. Keep the reply. It becomes your reference if the final evaluation comes back lower than you were led to expect.
2. Collect syllabi while your lecturers still know you
Nigerian departments rarely hand out course descriptions unprompted, and chasing a stamped outline from another country is slow. Ask for topics, contact hours and recommended texts for every course you passed. Registrars use these to decide between direct credit and a general elective.
3. Start the transcript request first
Evaluators want documents sent by your university, so the registrar sets your pace. Open the request before you shortlist schools, and ask how long a sealed transcript takes to issue. A late transcript can cost you a whole intake.
4. Finish the session you are in and clear carryovers
Registrars evaluate completed, graded courses, so a half finished semester earns nothing. With minimum grades such as C or C minus, a repeated course can be the difference between credit and none. Leave with results released for every course you want counted.
5. Keep a second country alive
A US admission is worth little if the visa cannot be issued, so apply to a UK Year 2 course or another destination in parallel. Compare funds, deadlines and post study work rules before you commit. If a visa is refused, our study visa refusal reasons guide shows what officers look for.
Frequently asked questions about transferring from a Nigerian university abroad
Can I transfer from a Nigerian university to a US university in 2027?
You can apply, be evaluated and be admitted, but the visa is the obstacle. Proclamation 10998 suspends new F visas for Nigerian nationals who were outside the US and held no valid visa on 1 January 2026, with limited exceptions such as dual nationals travelling on a passport from an unaffected country. Ask admissions about deferral before paying fees, and confirm your own situation on the Embassy page.
How many credits will a US university accept from my Nigerian degree?
There is no national number. Published caps include 60 at Virginia’s College of Arts and Sciences, 75 or 90 at George Mason and 30 per academic year at Missouri State. Residency rules add a second limit by requiring a minimum number of credits at the new university. The answer is always school specific.
Can I join Year 2 of a UK degree after one year in Nigeria?
Sometimes. You apply through UCAS, choose Year 2 as your entry point and the university decides under its recognition of prior learning policy. East London expects 120 credits completed at level 4, and first year content has to match closely. If it does not, you may be offered Year 1 instead. Email the admissions team your module list before applying.
Do I need WES for a UK application?
WES is mainly a US and Canada requirement. UK universities often assess Nigerian qualifications themselves, and some route international certificates through UK ENIC, formerly NARIC, as Sussex does to set credit value. Check each course page, because an unnecessary evaluation costs money and weeks. Whichever evaluator you use, your Nigerian university will probably have to send the documents directly.
How much money must I show for a UK Student visa?
From 30 November 2026 you must show £1,570 per month for London courses or £1,203 outside London, for up to nine months, plus any unpaid first year tuition shown on your CAS. The funds must be held for 28 days before you apply. The GOV.UK money page shows the figure in force on the day you apply, and reports say it is now reviewed each year.
Does a failed or repeated course hurt my transfer?
It can. Registrars apply minimum grades, such as C at George Mason and C minus at the University of Houston, and a course below the line earns no transfer credit. Your converted GPA is calculated from the transcript you submit. If you plan to transfer from Nigerian university abroad, clear carryovers before the evaluation is ordered, because the report reflects your record on the day it is sent.
Where to start this week
Three points carry the whole process. Registrars decide credit, not evaluators, and caps mean you will rarely bring everything with you. Documents move at the speed of your Nigerian registrar, so begin there. And in 2027 the destination decides the risk: the US route depends on a visa suspension that is still in force, while the UK route runs to a UCAS deadline on 13 January 2027 and a funding threshold that rises on 30 November.
Open the tracking sheet described above, add one row per course, and email three admissions offices today. Before you shortlist, our guide on how to research a university before you apply shows what to check beyond the credit policy. Two years of graded coursework is real evidence of what you can do, and a well documented file gives a registrar the reason to say yes.
