US F-1 Student Visa: Complete Application Guide 2026

On 1 January 2026, the US partially suspended student visa issuance for nationals of 19 countries, including Nigeria, Senegal, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. For everyone else, the US F-1 visa application 2026 now costs as much as $785, up from $535, at consulates that collect the new $250 Visa Integrity Fee. Both facts change how you should plan. Most guides written before this year mention neither. This guide takes you from the I-20 to the interview, shows the exact order for paying the SEVIS fee, and lists the questions officers put to students. You will know what is in your control before you book anything.

What is different about the US F-1 visa application 2026

Most guides list three steps: get an I-20, pay the SEVIS fee, attend an interview. That is accurate and no longer enough. Three checks now come before step one.

Your nationality. Under Presidential Proclamation 10998, the State Department partially suspended F, M and J visa issuance for nationals of 19 countries and fully suspended it for 19 more. Nigeria, Senegal, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Malawi, Benin, Togo, The Gambia, Côte d’Ivoire and Gabon are on the partial list. The rule reaches people who were outside the US on 1 January without a valid visa. If you already held a valid F-1 visa, it was not revoked. Listed nationals can still apply and interview, but the State Department’s own notice says they may be ineligible for issuance. Exceptions are narrow: dual nationals applying on a passport from an unlisted country, and case by case national interest decisions.

Your interview city. Since 1 August 2026, routine visa work at 25 African posts, including Abuja, Harare, Lusaka, Lilongwe, Bamako and Windhoek, has moved to regional hubs such as Lagos, Accra, Nairobi and Johannesburg. The department also said that fees paid at a post losing routine services were not refunded if no appointment was booked by 31 July. Pay the visa fee only for the post that will see you.

Your status after arrival. A DHS rule replacing open ended “duration of status” with fixed admission periods was due on 15 September 2026. A federal court in Massachusetts postponed it, and an appeal is expected. Check again before you fly.

Who qualifies and what the F-1 visa costs

An F-1 visa is for full time academic study at a school certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). You qualify when four things are true. A certified school has admitted you and issued a Form I-20. You can show funds for the first year of costs on that form. You intend to study full time. You can convince an officer that you will return home afterwards. That last point causes most refusals, under Section 214(b) of US immigration law.

Funding has no universal figure. Your I-20 states the school’s estimate for tuition, fees and living costs, and your documents must meet or exceed it. Bring bank statements, sponsor letters and proof of how the money was earned, not only the balance. If you still need a test score, our IELTS vs TOEFL comparison and GRE vs GMAT guide cover what changed this year.

ChargeAmountWhen you payNote
SEVIS I-901 fee$350Before the interviewPaid online, never at the airport
Visa application fee (MRV)$185When you bookPay for the post where you interview
Visa Integrity Fee$250At visa issuanceCollected unevenly by post; refund process not finalised

Total$535 or $785Some nationalities pay an extra reciprocity fee

Carry your passport, signed I-20, DS-160 confirmation page, visa fee receipt, SEVIS confirmation, one printed photo, financial evidence, transcripts and test scores. The State Department’s student visa page lists each form. Visas for new students can be issued up to 365 days before your program starts. You cannot enter the US more than 30 days before the start date on your I-20.

The SEVIS fee payment sequence, step by step

People pay the SEVIS fee in the wrong order more often than any other fee. This sequence avoids paying twice or paying against a wrong record.

  1. Collect your signed I-20. Your SEVIS ID starts with the letter N and sits at the top right of page one. Your school code appears in the school section.
  2. Check every detail against your passport. Name, date of birth and program dates are tied to the SEVIS record, and only your school’s designated official can correct them. Ask for a corrected I-20 before you pay.
  3. Open the official portal at FMJfee.com. Use that address only. Lookalike sites add charges.
  4. Enter the SEVIS ID, school code and your details exactly as printed, then pay $350. If your card is declined, use an alternative method listed on the portal rather than retrying repeatedly.
  5. Print the confirmation immediately and save a PDF. Officers ask for it. You can reprint it from the portal.
  6. Now complete the DS-160, pay the $185 visa fee and book. The ICE fee FAQ says you may book before paying SEVIS, but the fee must be paid before you appear, and it cannot be paid at the port of entry.
  7. If you reapply later, check before paying again. ICE says you do not pay the SEVIS fee again if you apply for a visa within 12 months of your payment. Confirm the details with your school adviser if your school or program has changed.

F-1 interview questions and what officers are testing

Interviews are short, so every answer needs to do work. These are the question types students report most often. Officers do not read from a script, but the pattern holds.

QuestionWhat the officer is checkingWhat a strong answer includes
Why this university?Whether you chose a program, not just a countryOne named course, lab or faculty link to your background
Why not study this at home?Whether the US is a reasoned choiceA specific gap, stated without criticising local universities
Who is paying, and what do they do?Whether funds are real and traceableSponsor’s job, rough yearly income, how it covers the I-20 total
What will you do after graduation?Intent to return, under 214(b)A concrete job or business plan at home, with a sector or employer
Do you have family in the US?Possible intent to stayAn honest answer with context on where you will live
How much does your first year cost?Whether you know your own fileThe I-20 total, said from memory
Why this field after your last degree?Academic coherenceTwo sentences linking past study to the new program

Two things have changed the room. Since September 2025, interview waivers cover almost no F-1 applicants, so plan on a full interview even for renewals. The DS-160 also asks for your social media identifiers from the past five years, and the State Department instructs F, M and J applicants to make those profiles public. Do not delete old accounts in a panic. A profile that contradicts your application is a bigger problem than one that is merely visible. For a longer question bank and refusal patterns, read our guide to what officers actually ask at an F-1 interview.

Your F-1 timeline tracker

Copy this into your notes app and add your own dates. Working back from your program start keeps you inside the 365 day and 30 day limits.

Once you are settled, plan the next step early. Our guide to converting a student visa to a work visa after graduation covers the dates that matter after your degree.

Five tips from applicants who got through

1. Fix the I-20 before you pay for anything

Every later step hangs off the SEVIS record, so a misspelled surname becomes a problem at the interview and again at the border. Ask your designated school official to reissue the form before you pay the $350. It costs a few days of email and prevents a mismatch that officers notice at once.

2. Pay the visa fee for the post that will actually see you

With routine services realigned across Africa and most applicants told to interview where they live or hold nationality, wrong post payments are the cheapest mistake to make. Confirm your designated location on the State Department’s post list, then pay and book in the same sitting. Check wait times before you fix travel plans around a date.

3. Build one funding story and make every document tell it

Officers listen for a single sponsor, a clear income source and a total that meets your I-20. Three sponsors from different employers and a last minute deposit raise questions faster than a modest, steady income does. Bring statements that show how the money accumulated, and be able to say the yearly cost without notes.

4. Treat your public profiles as part of the file

List every handle from the past five years on the DS-160, and set the profiles to public as instructed. Read them as an officer would: do your posts agree with your stated field, employer and plans? If something contradicts your application, correct the application. Mass deleting accounts looks worse than a profile that simply shows a different hobby.

5. Answer in two sentences, then stop

Short, specific answers beat rehearsed speeches. Say what you will study, why that school, and what you will do afterwards, each in a sentence or two. If you do not understand a question, ask for it again instead of guessing. Practise aloud with a friend until the names and numbers come without notes.

Frequently asked questions about the US F-1 visa application 2026

Can Nigerian students still get an F-1 visa in 2026?

Nigeria has been on the partial suspension list since 1 January 2026, which covers new F, M and J visas. Nigerian applicants can still apply and attend interviews, but they may be ineligible for issuance unless an exception applies, such as a dual national using a passport from an unlisted country. Students who held a valid F-1 visa on that date were not affected. As of early October 2026 we found no official notice lifting the suspension, so check the State Department page before paying any fee.

What F-1 student visa interview tips matter most now that waivers are gone?

Expect a full interview, including for renewals, since waivers now cover almost no F-1 applicants. Prepare three answers cold: why this school, who pays, and what you will do after graduating. Keep documents in the order an officer would ask for them, and answer only what was asked. Calm, consistent answers carry more weight than polished ones.

When should I pay the SEVIS fee for an F-1 visa?

Pay it after your I-20 is correct and before your interview. ICE allows you to book the appointment first, but you must have paid before you appear, and the fee cannot be paid at the port of entry. The amount is $350 at FMJfee.com, and you should keep the confirmation. F-2 dependents do not pay a separate SEVIS fee.

How early can I apply for an F-1 visa, and when can I fly?

Visas for new students can be issued up to 365 days before the program start date on your I-20. You can enter the US no earlier than 30 days before that date. Arriving sooner can lead to refused admission. Count back from your start date, not from the day you were admitted.

What does the US F-1 visa application 2026 cost in total?

Budget $535 for the SEVIS fee and visa fee, plus $250 for the Visa Integrity Fee where your post collects it, which brings the total to $785. The integrity fee is paid at issuance, and the law allows a refund if you follow your visa terms, though the claims process is not finalised. Some nationalities pay an extra reciprocity fee. Courier and photo costs sit on top.

What happens if my F-1 visa is refused?

Most refusals cite Section 214(b), meaning the officer was not satisfied that you intend to return home. Ask what was missing, then reapply only with new evidence, such as clearer funding or a firmer career plan. A 221(g) notice is administrative processing and usually means the post needs more documents or checks. ICE says you do not pay the SEVIS fee again if you apply within 12 months of your payment.

About this guide: We checked the fees, dates and country restrictions here against the State Department’s visa pages, the ICE SEVIS fee FAQ and international student office notices from Boston University on 6 October 2026. Rules for the F-1 visa move quickly, so we will update this page when they do. If a consulate tells you something different, follow the consulate.

Your next step

Three things decide how smoothly this goes. Confirm your nationality’s status on the State Department notice before you spend a dollar. Get the I-20 right, pay the SEVIS fee second, and pay the visa fee only for the post that will see you. Then rehearse short, consistent answers about your school, your funding and your plan to return.
