Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027: Complete Application Guide

The Gates Cambridge Trust says it offers around 70 full cost scholarships a year, and its maintenance allowance for 2026 to 27 is £23,152 for twelve months. Several guides to the Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027 still print 80 awards and £22,050, figures that do not match the Trust’s own pages. That gap matters, because this is a scholarship where the details decide who gets through.

Insider context: who funds Gates Cambridge and who really decides

The programme exists because of a single gift. In October 2000 the Gates Foundation donated US$210 million to the University of Cambridge, and the first scholars arrived the following year. About 250 scholars now study in Cambridge at any one time, and the alumni community counts more than 1,700 people from 116 countries. The Trust describes its mission as building a global network of people committed to improving the lives of others, which explains why grades alone never settle an application.

Here is the detail most guides skip. You do not apply to Gates Cambridge as a separate scheme. You submit one combined form through the Cambridge Graduate Application Portal, choose your course and college, and complete the Gates Cambridge part of the funding section. After that, the real filter begins. The Trust asks each academic department to nominate only a small number of applicants who meet all four criteria to a very high level, and only those nominees are invited to interview.

That is the misconception worth correcting. Applicants treat the four short essays as the whole contest, but the Trust says the essays and the extra reference exist to separate candidates a department has already nominated. In practice your first reader is a Cambridge academic deciding whether you will cope with their course. Write for that person before you write for the panel.

Who can apply

You can apply if you are a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom and you are applying for a PhD (full time, or part time under a pilot scheme), a full time MLitt, or a full time one year postgraduate course. The Trust does not consider undergraduate degrees, MASt courses, part time degrees other than the PhD, or professional courses such as the MBA, EMBA, MFin and PGCE. Current Cambridge students may apply for a new course, but cannot ask Gates to fund the remainder of one already under way.

What it pays

Component2026 to 27 terms
University Composition FeePaid at the appropriate rate
Maintenance allowance£23,152 for 12 months, pro rata for shorter courses; up to 4 years for PhD scholars
AirfareOne economy single at the start and one at the end
Visa and healthInbound visa costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge
Academic development (discretionary)£750 up to £4,000, depending on course length
Dependent children (discretionary)Up to £12,793 a year for one child, £18,244 for two or more; nothing for a partner

These figures come from the Trust’s scholarship page. Divide £23,152 by twelve and you get roughly £1,929 a month, our own arithmetic rather than a Trust figure. Bench fees and scientific equipment are not covered, because the Trust expects your department to provide them.

Deadlines and documents

US citizens resident in the United States apply in the earlier round, which closes at 11:59pm UK time on Wednesday 14 October 2026. Everyone else, including US citizens living abroad, applies by the Course Funding Deadline shown in the Cambridge Course Directory: either Tuesday 8 December 2026 or Wednesday 6 January 2027. The Trust’s timeline page says later round outcomes arrive by 8 March 2027, panels meet on 22 and 23 March, offers follow by early April, and you then have 72 hours to accept.

Prepare four short answers, two academic references and a separate Gates Cambridge reference. PhD applicants also need a research proposal. Every application is judged on four criteria: intellectual ability, reasons for choice of course, a commitment to improving the lives of others, and leadership potential.

Read the deadlines row first. Chevening closes on 6 October 2026, roughly nine weeks before the first Gates international deadline. The Commonwealth route has a Commission deadline of 20 October, but national nominating agencies often set earlier dates, so the date that matters is the one your agency publishes. Gates sits last in the sequence, which gives you time, but only if you start the referee conversations now. A referee who has already written about you for another application can reuse their notes, though the Gates letter must speak to the Gates criteria.

Why the three are not interchangeable

Chevening is a one year master’s award for people with at least two years of work experience, selected by reading committees, and our Chevening guide covers that route in detail. Gates accepts PhD applicants, which Chevening does not, and it hands the first decision to a Cambridge department rather than a committee. The Commonwealth PhD is open only to candidates from eligible least developed and fragile Commonwealth countries, so check your country before you invest weeks in it. It also asks you to show that you could not afford UK study without the award, which changes how you frame your background. If you qualify for more than one, apply to all of them, but write each essay set from scratch, because the questions and the readers differ.

Build a tracker before you write a word

Gates Cambridge runs on three clocks that do not move together: the course funding deadline Cambridge sets, the date by which both academic referees and your Gates referee must submit, and the date your research proposal is ready if you are applying for a PhD. Miss any one and the application is incomplete, even if your essays are finished. Essays get the attention, so the other two clocks are the ones that slip.

Our application tracking system guide shows how to build a simple sheet with one row per deliverable, one owner per row and a date set a week before the real one. For Gates, add a column for each referee, a column for the research proposal, and a note of which round you belong to. Review it every Friday. It takes ten minutes, and it turns a vague worry into a list you can finish.

Five tips that follow how Gates Cambridge scholars are actually selected

1. Settle your course and supervisor first

Because a department nominates before Gates looks closely, your course choice carries more weight than it seems. Read the department’s pages, identify the supervisor whose work matches your question, and explain why Cambridge in particular, not just why a good university. If you are applying for a PhD, your research proposal has to be ready early, and our guide to writing a research proposal explains how funders differ on length. A vague match to a department is a risk you can remove.

2. Brief your Gates referee in writing

The Gates Cambridge reference is separate from your two academic references. The referee must rate you as exceptional, strong, not strong or weak, and say how you rank within a group of a stated size. That is harder than writing a standard letter. Send your referee the four criteria, two or three examples they could mention, and the deadline. The Trust warns against rehashing a previous reference and says friends and family should not write it.

3. Give each essay one concrete example

The four questions run to roughly 200, 200, 300 and 300 words, with character limits of 1,400, 1,400, 2,100 and 2,100. Those limits leave room for one specific story per question, not a list of achievements. For leadership, the Trust mentions initiating a change or bringing others together, so choose an episode where something was different afterwards. For your commitment to improving the lives of others, explain why it matters to you and how it connects to your plans. The Trust itself says there is no right answer.

4. Rehearse for questions with no right answer

Shortlisted candidates face a 25 to 30 minute interview with one of four panels: Arts, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences or Social Sciences. Expect questions on the scholarship, your academic work, your course choice and your career plans. The Trust also says you may meet probing intellectual or ethical questions with no right answer. Practise thinking aloud, changing your mind in public and explaining your reasoning. Interviews can be in person or virtual, and in person is encouraged where you can manage it.

5. Submit early and plan for silence

Documents must be in by 11:59pm UK time on the stated date, and so must both sets of references. Aim to submit a week early so a referee’s delay does not become your problem. The Trust cannot give feedback to unsuccessful applicants, so decide in advance what you will do with a no. Cambridge offers other funding too, so apply for it in the same form instead of waiting for the Gates result. A successful candidate has 72 hours to accept an offer.

Frequently asked questions about Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027

Is the Gates Cambridge Scholarship a fully funded PhD?

It covers the full cost of study. A PhD award pays the University Composition Fee, a maintenance allowance of £23,152 for 12 months at the 2026 to 27 rate, an economy flight at each end and inbound visa costs with the Immigration Health Surcharge. For PhD scholars the award runs for up to four years. Bench fees and scientific equipment are not included, and the Trust expects your department to cover them.

Can I apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027 with a master’s course?

Yes, if the course is a full time one year postgraduate course or an MLitt. Roughly two thirds of awards go to PhD students, so master’s applicants compete for a smaller share. MASt courses, the MBA and several professional degrees are excluded, so check your course against the Trust’s eligibility list before you start.

Do I apply to Cambridge first and Gates second?

No. You submit one combined application through the Cambridge Graduate Application Portal. You complete the admission section for your course and college, then the Gates Cambridge part of the funding section. Gates can see the whole application when it reviews candidates.

Who should write my Gates Cambridge reference?

Choose someone with standing who can judge you against the four criteria, such as an advisor, an employer or a senior member of an organisation where you volunteered. One of your two academic referees can do it, provided they write about your personal qualities and do not simply add a third academic reference. Avoid friends and family. Brief them early, because they will be asked to rank you within a group and rate you from exceptional to weak.

I am a US citizen working abroad. Which round do I use?

You apply in the later round, with a Course Funding Deadline of 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027. The October round is only for people who are both US citizens and currently resident in the United States, and those applicants cannot use the later round. If you are unsure, the Trust asks you to email info@gatescambridge.org with your details.

Will Gates Cambridge tell me why I was rejected?

No. The Trust says it cannot provide feedback to unsuccessful applicants. If a department does not nominate you, you receive an email confirming the application was not successful. Use the time before the next cycle to strengthen your course match, your referees and your examples.

About this guide: We checked this guide against the Gates Cambridge Trust’s timeline, scholarship, eligibility, how to apply and how we select pages on 1 October 2026, and against Chevening’s application page for its deadline. Commonwealth details come from published cycle dates reported by UK universities, so confirm them with your national nominating agency. Where popular guides disagree with the Trust, we followed the Trust.

Your next step

Three things matter most. Your course sets your deadline, so check the Course Directory before anything else. A Cambridge department nominates you before Gates ever interviews you, so treat your course choice and proposal as the main event. And trust the Trust: £23,152 and about 70 awards are the figures on its own pages. Start with our statement of purpose guide, which will help you shape the academic story your department reads first.
