How to Convert a Student Visa to a Work Visa After Graduation (2026 Rules)
In the 2027 H-1B lottery, only 17.7 percent of the selected registrations were at the lowest wage level. That single figure shows how the market now treats a work visa after graduation: your employer, your salary and your occupation count for as much as your degree does. Every major study destination offers a bridge permit that lets you stay and work for a while after you finish, and none of those permits turns into a full work visa on its own.
This guide shows you how to convert a student visa in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Germany, using the rules as they stand on 20 September 2026. You will see the filing windows that matter, the mistakes that cost graduates their place, and how to build the last year of your studies around a deadline.

Why a student visa never converts on its own

A student visa is tied to your school. A work visa is tied to an employer, a salary and an occupation, and nothing in between swaps one for the other. What you get is a bridge: OPT in the United States, the Graduate visa in the UK, the PGWP in Canada, the Temporary Graduate visa in Australia and the job seeker permit in Germany. None of them needs a job offer, and every one of them runs on a clock.
How much of that clock you keep depends on dates most people never read closely. The UK shows it best. Picture two students who finish the same one year master’s in December 2026. One applies on 29 December and receives two years. The other applies on 4 January 2027 and receives 18 months, because the shorter period follows the date of application, not the date the course ended.
The United States has changed in price more than in permission. A presidential proclamation attaching a $100,000 payment to certain H-1B petitions was extended on 18 September 2026 for another year, while a court order blocking its enforcement is under appeal. Guidance issued after the original proclamation exempts change of status petitions for people already in the country, which describes an F-1 graduate switching to H-1B without travelling.
Work visa after graduation: the bridge permit in five countries
Each country names its bridge differently, but the conditions look alike: an approved qualification, valid student status on the day you file, a fixed window and a fee. The USCIS Optional Practical Training page explains the US version, the GOV.UK Graduate visa page covers the UK, and IRCC’s page on working after you graduate covers the Canadian PGWP.
| Country | Bridge permit | How long | Filing window and key condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | OPT, then STEM OPT | 12 months, plus 24 months for STEM degrees | Up to 90 days before your program ends and no later than 60 days after; the job must relate to your degree |
| United Kingdom | Graduate visa | 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027, 3 years for PhDs | Apply from inside the UK before your Student visa expires; £937 plus £1,035 health surcharge per year |
| Canada | PGWP | Up to 3 years, based on program length | Within 180 days of final results; CLB 7 for degrees, CLB 5 for college; program of at least 8 months |
| Australia | Temporary Graduate visa (485) | 2 years for bachelor’s and coursework master’s, 3 years for research master’s and PhD | Within 6 months of finishing; age 35 or younger with exceptions; AUD 5,750 for the main applicant |
| Germany | Job seeker permit (section 20, Residence Act) | Up to 18 months | After final results from a recognised German university; you can take any job while you search |
Notice what the table does not contain: a job offer. That is the point of a bridge. The catch sits in the last column, because a missed window is hard to repair.
What the work visa itself asks for
United States: H-1B
Your employer registers you in March, and since the 2027 cycle selection is weighted by wage level, from one entry at Level 1 to four at Level 4. Of those selected, 71.5 percent held a US advanced degree. A STEM degree gives you up to three attempts across 36 months, while a degree outside STEM usually gives one or two.
United Kingdom: Skilled Worker
You need a licensed sponsor and a role at the required skill level. The general salary threshold has been £41,700 since 22 July 2025, while new entrants, including people switching from the Graduate visa, can qualify at £33,400 and 70 percent of the going rate. New entrant status lasts four years in total, and time on the Graduate visa reportedly counts toward it, so confirm this in the official rules. Our UK Skilled Worker visa guide covers the sponsor side.
Canada: from PGWP to permanent residence
Canada has no work visa to switch into. Most graduates use the PGWP to build skilled Canadian work experience, then move to permanent residence through Express Entry or a provincial nomination. Our Canada PR visa guide walks through the Express Entry steps.
Australia: the 485 is a pause, not a destination
The 485 does not lead straight to permanent residence. Graduates use it to find an employer sponsor or qualify for a points tested skilled visa.
Germany: the EU Blue Card
Once you hold a qualifying contract, you switch to the EU Blue Card. The 2026 salary threshold is €50,700, or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations and for graduates within three years of finishing. Permanent residence can follow after 21 months with B1 German or 27 months without. Our guide to studying and working in Germany covers the student side.
Six mistakes that cost graduates their conversion
These come from how the rules are written and from the refusal reasons that immigration advisers keep repeating, not from guesswork.
1. Waiting for the graduation ceremony
In the UK you can apply once your university reports that you completed the course, with no need to wait for the ceremony. In Canada the 180 days start when you receive written confirmation of completion. In the US the OPT window opens 90 days before your program end date. Waiting for the ceremony can use up a filing window.
2. Booking the wrong language test for Canada
The PGWP needs CLB 7 for degree graduates and CLB 5 for college graduates, in all four skills, with a result that is still valid when you apply. Academic IELTS is not accepted, so the score from your study permit may not help. IELTS General Training and CELPIP General are commonly used, so check IRCC’s list before you book.
3. Travelling while the decision is pending
The UK tells Graduate visa applicants not to leave the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until they have a decision. In the US, leaving while an F-1 to H-1B change of status is pending is treated as abandoning it and ends cap gap protection. Ask your international office before any trip while a permit is pending, even a short one.
4. Treating the bridge as the plan
The UK Graduate visa cannot be extended, and time on it does not count toward settlement under work routes such as Skilled Worker. The PGWP is once in a lifetime. The Australian 485 does not lead directly to residence. Start the employer search in the first month of your permit, not the twelfth.
5. Ignoring the wage level in the US lottery
Under the weighted lottery, your employer’s registration carries one entry at Level 1 and up to four at Level 4. The same job title can land on different levels in different cities. Before you accept an offer, ask which level your employer will register and what happens if you are not selected. Entry level roles sit at the bottom of the weighting, so early career graduates feel this most.
6. Counting your age at graduation instead of at filing
The Australian 485 has an age ceiling of 35 at lodgement for most applicants. Exceptions up to 49 exist for research master’s graduates, PhD graduates and Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport holders. You must also lodge within six months of finishing, while in Australia.
Your countdown tracker
Every mistake above is a date problem. Before your final semester, build a one page tracker with the rows below, using the method in our guide to building an application tracking system for students. Check it on the first of every month, and keep the paperwork itself in order with our guide to organising your application documents.
| What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Course completion date confirmed by your school | Starts the Canadian 180 days and the US 60 day OPT window, and unlocks the UK application |
| Earliest and latest filing date for your bridge permit | The late end is the one that cannot be moved |
| Bridge permit expiry date | Your deadline for a sponsor, Blue Card or other visa |
| Language test result and its expiry | Canada requires a valid result on the day you apply |
| Employer registration or sponsorship deadlines | H-1B registration happens in March; sponsors need lead time |
| Days of unemployment used on OPT | Limit: 90 days on OPT, 150 with the STEM extension |
Five tips for converting before your permit runs out
1. Talk to employers a year before your permit starts
Sponsorship decisions take longer than job offers. In the UK, only employers with a sponsor licence can hire you on the Skilled Worker route. Ask in the first interview whether the company sponsors, and treat a vague answer as a no.
2. Learn the salary line for your route before you negotiate
The numbers are specific: £33,400 for a UK new entrant, £41,700 for the general UK threshold, €45,934.20 for a recent graduate on the German Blue Card. An offer just below a threshold is a refusal, not a small gap. Ask for the figure that clears the line, and say why.
3. Keep a dated evidence file
Save the completion confirmation, your final transcript, your test results and every receipt in one folder the day you get them. Several of these documents are hard to reissue after you leave campus. Add the filing dates to your tracker so the folder and the calendar agree.
4. Choose a job you can defend against your degree
OPT work must relate to your degree, a Blue Card contract must match your qualification, and a UK sponsored role must sit at the required skill level. Before you accept, write two sentences linking the duties to your studies. If you cannot, the officer reading your file may not be able to either.
5. Use every window you are entitled to
A STEM graduate in the US can enter the H-1B lottery up to three times. A UK graduate who applies before 1 January 2027 keeps two years. A Canadian graduate can apply the same day the final results arrive, so file early inside every window.
Frequently asked questions about a work visa after graduation
Can I convert a student visa to a work visa without a job offer?
Not into a sponsored work visa. To convert a student visa into an H-1B, Skilled Worker visa or EU Blue Card, you need an employer, because all three depend on one. The bridge permits in this guide need no job offer, so use that period to find one.
How long can I stay and work after graduating?
The bridge before any work visa after graduation lasts 12 months on OPT in the US, or up to 36 with a STEM extension. In the UK, 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027, and 3 years for PhDs. Canada allows up to 3 years, Australia 2 or 3, and Germany up to 18 months.
Does the $100,000 H-1B fee apply if I change status from F-1?
Guidance issued after the proclamation exempts change of status petitions for people already in the US, provided USCIS grants the change. The payment targets workers abroad who must enter to start. Because litigation continues and the policy was extended, ask your employer’s immigration lawyer to confirm before filing.
Is the UK Graduate visa really being cut to 18 months, and does it affect me?
Yes. Applications made on or after 1 January 2027 receive 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates, while PhD graduates keep three years. The rule follows the application date, not your course dates, so if your completion is reported in 2026, applying before 1 January keeps two years.
Can I apply for a post study work permit from my home country?
It depends on the country. The UK Graduate visa must be applied for from inside the UK, and the Australian 485 requires you to be in Australia when you lodge. Canada allows PGWP applications from inside or outside the country if you meet the eligibility rules.
What happens if my H-1B registration is not selected?
Unselected registrations do not carry over, so your employer must register you again the following March. If you hold a STEM OPT extension, you keep working while you wait for the next cycle. Employers that are cap exempt, such as universities and nonprofit research organisations, are not subject to the lottery.
About this guide. We checked the figures here against USCIS, GOV.UK and Australian Home Affairs pages, IRCC guidance as summarised by Canadian universities and immigration law firms, and law firm reporting on the 2026 changes, as of 20 September 2026. US rules are changing week to week, so every figure carries a date. This is general information, not legal advice; confirm your situation with your university’s international office or a licensed adviser before you file.
Where to start this week
Three points carry this guide. A bridge permit buys time, and an employer, a salary and an occupation turn that time into a work visa. Your filing windows follow completion and application dates, so write them down before your final semester. The rules are moving fastest in the United States and the UK, so read the official page again the week you file.
